A LICENSE LEFT IN CLUTHA AFTER- ALL.
[by telegraph—pbess association.] Dunedin, Bth December. The Returning Officer for the Clutha (hitherto Prohibition) announces that, as the result of the Local Option poll, the license which was included in the district by the change of boundaries will continue. The voting was — Continuance, 1618; reduction, 1630; no license, 1989. The number of voters was 3735, including 49 informal. [To carry reduction the Act of 1895 requires "an absolute majority of all the voters whose votes were recorded." As iri this instance there were only 1630 out of a total of 3735, matters have to remain as they are —i.e., the one house will continue open. Thus it happens that in not one electorate in the colony is either Prohibition or reduction of licenses carried.] [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] Mabton, This Day. The local option poll for this district has resulted as follows :—To continue, 1777; to reduce, 1030; for prohibition, 1221; votes recorded, 3195.
