At a meeting of the School Committees Conference it was decided not to express an opinion on the Bible-reading in schools question, which the Conference thought should be decided by referendum. A resolution was carried that corporal punishment other than on the hand should not be inflicted except in extreme cases, and then only by the head master, and that in the case of girls no corporal punishment whatever Bhould be inflicted, unless under very exceptional circumstances.
