THE SCULPTURED HAND,

It has been remarked that the Emperor of Germany has not entered the town of Mayence, although recently he had been repeatedly close to it. A local newspaper tells the following story in explanation : — On a wall of Mayence Cathedral there I is a sculptured hand, which is raised as if in the act of taking an oath. When the Emperor Francis of Austria was still German Emperor he visited Mayence, and was so hospitably received by the clergy that he solemnly promised, and took an oath, that that German Emperor who from that day came first to Mayence and spent the night there, must pay for the building of the two towers on the Cathedral. As a sign of the promise, the hand was carved in the stone. " And no Emperor has spent the night here since that time," said the old man who is represented as telling the story, "and you will see that the present Emperor will not stay here any more than his grandfather did "
