DEATH OF DR. WHITEHEAD.

. 4 After a comparatively short illness—beginning with an attack of influenza, whioh led to other complications -Dr. A. Meredith Whitehead, a well-known member of the medical faoulty, died yesterday at the residence of Dr. Collins in Boulcott-street. He was attended unremittingly by Dr. Adams during his illness, and when alarming symptoms presented themselves Drs. Ewart, Aoson, and Martin wero consulted. He rallied yesterday morning, but about halfpast 1 o olook had a relapse, and died about 4 o'olook. Dr. Whitehead was born at Nottingham in 1881, hia father being an auctioneer in a large way of bnsinoas. He studied at the London Boßpital and the Aberdeen University , qualifying atthe latter in 1883, and taking the degree of M.8.0.M. After practising for a while iv hia native town he became medlual offioer to a steamer in the China' trade, leaving that to oome to the oolony in 1886 with his brother, Mr. W. M . Whitehead, now in business in Nottingham Ho commenced praotico at Petone, where he subsequently entered into partnership with Dr. Wilford, and on the latter retiring from praotioe in 1891, Dr WliUnhead was joined by Dr. Purdy, an old oullege assooiate. In May, 1891, he revisited England, and on returning in February hist be beoame a partner of Dr. Collins, whose business he has oondnctod sinoe tbe latter recently went to England on a visit. He leaves a widow (formerly a Miss Allan, of D uned in) and three ohildren, as woll as a sUtor, Mrs. Btevens, of Poricua. His death will be generally regretted, as he was well liked, espooiallyiu tho Petone and Hutt districts, where he was oonnected with many institutions, at one time being a member of the Petone Borough Counoil, and medical officer to various Friendly Sooietres '- He was a member of , the Ulster Lodge of Freemasons, was surgeon to the Petono Navala, and had joined the Wellington -Navals iv a similar capacity.. The funeral is to take place to-morrow afternoon, the Wellington Navals esaorting the' remains to the Bailway station in time to catch the 2 30 p m. train to the Lower Hutt. The Wellington Naval s are to form a firing party at the funeral, .
