GOLF.

TO THB EDITOB. Sib — I saw some time ago by the Spectator that golf had seized hold of the people of England, and held them devoted slaves. The learned Spectator was at a loss to account properly for the madness— it is a phase of madness— and so lam nut surprised to find it has spread to this remote isle. A poem (by no mean poet) on tile snbjeot may beof interest toyonandyour readers, that isif it has not already been published here. It is entitled GOLF STEALS OtJB TOOTH. Have you seen the golfers airy Prancing forth to their vagary, Just as frisky in their gaiters As a flock of Grecian satyrs, Looking everything heroic, And magnificently stoio, In a dress of such a pattern As would fright the good god Saturn Have you heard them curse the spairow Fit to freeze your inmost marrow, When the ball that should be flitting, On the grass remaineth sitting? Have you watched their cheerful scrambles In the soft and soothing brambles While the foe, elate and sneering, Passes gradually from wearing ? After blaming all the witches, After rending holes in breeches, After getting in a muddle With each rivulet and puddle, They return, all labour ended, To record their prowess splendid, And renew by dictionary Their fatigued vocabulary. Let these gentlemen ecstatic, In their costumes so emphatic, Crawl to find a rounded treasure Iv the horse-pond at their pleasure. What so good when time is sunny, And the air as sweet as honey, As the game of crease and wicket, England's proper pastime— Crioket P Of course the "proper pastime" for New Zealand, judging by the spaoe given (in session time, too) in a recent issue of the morningpaper here, is football. The above verses are takes from a book of cricket songs. I am, &o , ' __ „ O. L. HABXKAtnr. Wellington, 25th Angust, 1896.
