THE NEW BRITISH MINISTRY.

Of the members of the Salisbury Government, five are unmarried — Mr. A. J. Balfour, Mr. Austen Chamberlain, Sir Henry James, Mr. Hayes Fisher, Mr. E. Macartney; two — the Duke of Norfolk and Mr. T. W. Russell — are widowers ; and of the rest, two — Lord Halsbury and Mr. Chamberlain — have been married more than once. Mr. Hayes Fisher is on the brink of matrimony. Of the nine peers in the new Cabinet, four have earned their title — Sir Henry James (who will be known as Lord Aylestoae of Hereford), Lord Halsbury, Lord Ashbourne, and Lord Cross. Six peers out of the nine have served in the House of Commons, either in the days before their accession to the peerage or before their elevation to the Upper House. The three who have no knowledge of the Lower House are Lord Balfour of Burleigh (the Secretary for Scotland), Lord Lansdowne, and Lord Cadogan. As to the academic character of the Ministry, Oxford University leads by' contributing eleven members, Cambridge sends three, and Trinity College, Dublin, one — Lord ARhbourne. Four membershave no University record — Mr. Chamberlain, who was educated at University College School, London ; Sir Henry James, who went from Cheltenham to the Middle Temple ; Lord George Hamilton, who, instead of going to college, became an ensign in the Rifle Brigade ; and Mr. Ritchie, who went Btraight from school to a City counting-house.
