"Bank of New Zealand Shareholder."— We cannot answer questions of law, bnt it seems to us that the shareholders may either accept or reject the soheme proposed in the BQI now before Parliament. Parliament cannot force it on them, or authorise onj fnrther call without their sanction. The Bonk Guarantee Act of hut session only authorised the one call of one-third of the reserve liability, the remaining two-thirds being rendered security for repayment of the two million loan. This arrangement was accepted hy the shareholders, hut is now varied by the Banking Bill, the Government abandoning the security over the uncalled two-thirds of reserve, and calunn; up onehalf thereof to furnish new capital to the Bank. Originally the reserve was only to be called up in case of the Bank goinir into liquidation. The shareholders can, we believe, decline to accept the new arrangement, but they would scsrcelj benefit themselves by doing so, as then the Bank would have to go into liquidation, and the whole of the reserve would nndoabtrdly have to be called up.
