DESTRUCTIVE BUSH FIRES WIDESPREAD RUIN WROUGHT BY A CARELESS ACT.
[press association.] Stdnst, 28th August The most disastrous bush fires ever known in the Greta distriot have been raging since Sunday. The area covered is 15 square miles. Thousands of aoros of grass have been destroyed, and many struggling farmers are ruined. Twenty thousand aores of grass 'have been burned round West Maitland. A lad has been arrested on the oharge of causing the fire. He Btates that he carelessly threw down a matoh after lighting his pipe. (Received August 29, noon.) Stdnet, This Dat.
