EDUCATION BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Edncation Board was held to-day. Present— Messrs. J. R. Blair (Chairman), F. H. Fraser, F. Bradey, J. Younsr, W. W. MoCardle, W. O. Bnohanan, M.H.R., Dr. Newman, M.H.8., and the Rev. J. Paterson. Mr. Johnson, of the Kaitnna Sohool Committee, interviewed the Board to urge the retention of the old site for the new Bohool about to be put up, as he understood that a petition had been sent in to ohange the site. The Chairman said the Board had not reoeived any suoh petition, and furthermore had deoided not to ohange the site. A deputation from the Mount Cook Sohool Committee asked for some improvement in the fenoing at the book of the boys' school, along the Gaol Beserve. Since last November the committee had been pnt to an expense of £12 in repairing windows broken by boys who frequented the reserve. The Chairman Baid that some time ago he represented the matter to tho Government, whioh was responsible for the fence, and a promise was givon that something wonld be done. Mrs. Francis, head teacher of the Mount Cook Infants' Sohool, was granted three months' leave of absence on full pay to visit Australia, and Miss C. Treadwell, assistant teaoher at Thorndon, was given twelve months' leave of absenoe on aooount of illhealth. Mr. Lee, Inspeotor, recommended the Board to ereot, or assist in the ereotion of, a sohool at Pouatahi, near Carterton. There were 25 or more ohildren there, too far from any other Bohool, and the district waß a large one. The report was adopted. Tenders were ordered to be invited for the ereotion of a teaoher's residence at Parkvale. Mieß Bessie Riddiok was promoted to the status of an assistant at the Thorndon School. With regard to a petition from the Monnt Cook School ICommittee opposing the scheme for a proposed club in tbe vioinitvof the Girls' Sohool, Mr. Fraser mentioned that the Government hod promised that no oharter would be granted. Tbe Chairman was authorised to represent the Board in opposing any future proposals of a similar oharaoter. The Publio Trustee wrote stating that the Board's tender had been aooepted for the lease of a native reserve at Newtown as the site of a new sohool, and plans were authorised to bs prepared. Applications were reoeived for tbe right to remove totara from the reserve in the Wellington Speoial Settlement Blook. It was decided to invite tenders. The carpenter was direoted to effeot necessary repairs at Eketahuna, Hastwell, and Taita; and grants of £5 10s and £2 were made tor improvements and repairs at Paikokariki and Cross' Creek respectively. The Chairman was appointed to deal with requests made fora wellatTenui, and metal, &a., at Mongoone Valley; also witb an application by Miss N Riddick, Featherston, to be transferred to Wellington. A pnmp was ordered to be procured for the West Taratabi Sohool, but requests for a teaoher's residence at Hastwell, and a water supply for the teaoher's residence at Carterton, were deferred. Tha transfer of Miss Broadbent from Carterton to Belvedere was approved, Miss Braithwaite to take her plaoe. Mrs. Scale, Greytown, was granted a month's leave of absenoe, on account of an aooident. Messrs. M'Cardle and Yonng reported that they could notreoommand the Board to lease a house offered for a teaoher's residence at Dreyertown, as proposed. No aotion was taken. On the motion of Mr. McCardle, the Chairman was instructed to apply to tbe Sohool Commissioners for five aores of the Nikau eduoation reserve as a school site. The following appointments were announoed as having been approved :— Miss Howam, pupil teaoher Levin State Farm Sohool; Miss Gregg, pnpil teacher, Makakahi; and Mies Florence Franklin, teaoher at TeWhiti. Appointments were also made of assistants for the Mangatainoka nnd Kilbirnie Sohools, subjeot to tbe approval of the Committees.
