ANTI-CHINESE LEAGUE. TO THE EDITOR.

Sib — I have read with considerable pleasure your able and statesmanlike article on the Undesirable Immigrants Bill. Years ago thousands and thousands of pounds were ■pent in assisting people to this country ; now we are going to sacrifice thousands of pounds in revenne by shutting our doors to enterprise and competition. Truly we are a narrow-minded people ! What has made the British Empire but the proud boost that she 1 tnrns her back upon no foe and shuts her door against no nation ? Your correspondent " Young New Zealand," in reply to my previous communication, says the lofty tone of " Englishwoman " is extremely amusing, and at the same time shows how utterly Chinese means. I cannot say that I feel amused, but sorry, to think that this fair oountry is being dragged down by a class of people whose only boast is that they are New Zealanders, which I am sorry to say means in many instances meanness, selfishness, oonoeit, and ignorance of national competitors and national honour. " Young New Zealander " says our forefathers left the Old Country, risking life and property. Yes, they were trnly noble Bpeoimens of the British race. I love those noble pioneers— no narrow-mindedness about them ; noble, largehearted. Visit Furopr, my young friend. We will try and spnre you— your mind is cramped and try and imitate those noble forefathers, of whom we are co proud. Let our minds rise to higher aims than the per. seoution of a handful of Chinese who happen to temporarily reside amongst us. I am, &c, Englishwoman. 24th August, 1894.
