A PROHIBITION SCHEME.
PROTECTION OF AFRICANS AGAINST ALCOHOL. [SPICIAL.] (Received August 26, 8 a.m.) London. 24th August. Sir Charles Dilke stated in the House of Commons that tbe great danger, if tbe proposed railway were constructed from the western ooaat of Afrioa to the interior, was that merchants would extend the traffic in aloohol. 'the Gold Coast, he asserted, itn-' ported 1,500,000 gallons, and Lagos 1,750,000 gallons yrarly. Lagos, Sierra Leone, and Gambia depended to a large extent on the revenue derived from spirits. Mr. Chamberlain, in replying, said the Government was considering whether it should not prohibit the introduction of aloohol in native territory under British ml *' •"■
