RATE OF WOMAN'S "INDUSTRIAL EMANCIPATION."
A recent United States census bulletin deals with the increase of the number of women engaged in professional occupations since 1870, and the results brought out are very striking. While the increase in the number of men engaged in gainful occupations generally has increased only 76 per cent, between 1870 and 1890, the increase for women during the period is 1 13 per cent. In professional occupations womenincreased over 237 per cent., against 126 per pent, for men, while in trade and transportation the increase for women is 1051 per cent., against 156 per oent. for men. The New York Literary Digest reproduces the list which shows the contrast between the two periods in the spheres of professional occupations and certain departments of trade and transportation :—: —
