The parties had some business connection in West Australia and at Broken Hill, and matters developed in*o a newspaper controversy of a personal character. Stanley republished an article from a i'remantle paper, in whioh Bichard's previons hißtory was violently attacked. Biohard replied with aspersions on Mrs Stanley. Much comment was made on the failure of Biohard to go into the witnessbox, but his counsel resented the imputation that he was afraid to do bo. The defence was provocation - that an advertisement had appeared in one of the looal papers in disparagement of Mrs. Stanley's moral oharacter; and it was asserted that Biohard was the oanse of its insertion.
