PUNISHMENT of a BRUTAL PARENT.
fBT TBLSaBA* H.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.! NAPIER, 21st' August. At the Waipawa, Magistrate's Court, Wm. Merriok, settler, Waikopiro, was sent to gaol for two months for brutally beating his daughter, aged 13, under oiroumstanoes already telegraphed. While he thrashed the naked girl, tied to a bed-post, until the blood spurted over the -walls, the mother stuffed a towel into her mouth to prevent her soreams being heard by the neighbours. The beating was inflio'ed beoanse the girl had run away from home in consequence of previous ill-treatment and starvation. The girl has been handed over to the almoner of the Charitable Aid Bon'rd.'
