THE SOMERVILLE CASE.

TO TH! EDITOR. Sib — You deserve, and will receive, tht thanks of thousands of people for youi vigorous and outspoken nrtiuje on the Masterton murder case. Never was urardei more foul ; nover was punishment more deserved. I have no hesitation in prououno' ing the yerdiot of Not Guilty an outrage upon sooiety. The amazing feature of tbe awful business is the coolness of the expert evidence. How can any medical man presume t) know the condition of Somerville's mind on the day of tho murder? It seems 03 though the medioal men have a grave responsibility resting upon their shoulders just here. Witbont examination, no medical man is justified in saying he believed Somerville insane when he fired the Bbofc. Judgment on the point cm only be formed by the surrounding circumstances, and those circumstances, in my humble opinion, prove fc'omerville to be a far saner man thkn many at present outside tho asylum. Again, if Somer ville all alon ? has been such a " queer" man, why did his relatives not have him placed under control? Why have they waited until murder has been committed before discovering that he was a dangerous man P I would 'like to ask if it is not possible for the Government to so amend the law as to allow tbe Crown the right to appeal for a new trial in this terrible case. I am, &c, Indignant.
