SUSPICIOUS FIRE AT PALMERSTON NORTH.

On Saturday night a four-roomed cottage was discovered to be on fire, but the flames were subdued without much damage. The building presented the appearanoe of having been wilfully set on fire. A good deal of tow saturated with kerosene was found lying abont. Tho owner and occupier, James Moody Ponton, has been arrested on a charge of arson. An inquest will be held, at the request of the polioe. Inspector Thomson has received a telegram from Sergeant Slattery stating that the outbreak was discovered by a boy named George Shailer, who at once gave the alarm, and his father and two brothers soon| extinguished the fire with some buckets of water. Ponton was absent at the time, and all the doorß were looked. A constable discovered come tow and loose wood saturated with kerosene, but when he returned later on the i plaoe had been swept up and some of the i tow buried.
