Mr. Spalding has requested the Hawaiian Senate to grant 50,000 dollars yearly for 20 years as a subsidy for a cable between California and Honolulu. Tho decision of the Government is doubtful. (Reoeived August 19, 11 a.m.) London, 18th Augnst. The trade journal The Engineer offers a prize of 1000 guineas for self-propelled road carriages. Bishop Barry, formerly of Sydney, has been appointed Beotor of St. James', Piccadilly. Mr. Stewart, Official Reo»iver, has paid the fourth dividend of Is in the estate of the Federal Bank of Australia.
