The opening of Parliament was marked by a very depressing scene, which resulted in Dr. Tanner, the Nationalist member for being suspended for a week. He was noisy and insulting, and at last called Mr. Harrington a liar. A s he refused to withdraw the expression, the Speaker '" named " him, and on Mr. Chamberlain's motion he was suspended Dr. Tanner was greatly excited, and lay back in bis seat, implying that ho would not retire, but on the Sergeant-at-Arms advancing ho walked on to the floor of the Chamber, shonting that he was " delighted to leave such a dirty House." Crossing over to the Treasury benches, he pointed to Mr. Chamberlain, yelling "Judas" repeatedly, and finally elbowed a path through tbe crowded passage to the Bar of the House, shouting on his way, "None of I your nonsense." Dr. Tanner added to his riotous behaviour by seizing one of the members and shaking him by the coat-collar. None of the other Irish members gavo him any support.
