GOLD IN WELLINGTON.
♦ The Publio Works Committee of the City Counoil last night had before it four application* for gold mining leases on the Waterworks Heserve at Baker's Hill. It will be remembered that many years ago there were a number of people engaged in prospeoting and alluvial working at Baker's Hill and in the Kaiwarra stream. The colour was everywhere obtainable, and in some cases very good prospects were obtained— in fact, a few parties made wageß for a time. Several " leaders " were found whioh it was thought indicated the existence of an auriferous reef in the neighbourhood, but tbiß never could be found. It is now alleged that prospecting has been carried on for a long time back, and has at last been rewarded by the discovery of a well-defined reef on the Water, works Reserve, samples 'of the stone assayed at the Colonial Museum yielding at the rate ot2oz ldwt Hgr of gold to the ton. Hence the applications to the City Council. The Public Works Committee has instruotod the Waterworks Engineer (Mr. Hewitt) to visit the spot with the applicants," so that he may be able to report to the Council at its next meeting whether the proposed workings would interfere with or endanger the reservoir in any way.
