NEW ZEALAND.

The following lines were written by Mr. Thomas Bracken in connection with this week's gathering of ex-Otago settlers: — To-night we've met to honour those Who in the early days arose To plant the Thistle, and the Rose And Shamrock in New Zealand. We see the dear old faces flock— The faces of the Scottish stock Who bailt Otago on a rack Which held up dear New Zealand. We see the big old hills which climb To heaven and everlasting time, White-crown'd and mantled in their pine, Great kings of dear Otago. We see the men of Sixty-one, Though somo are left yet some are gone, But most of those bold hearts have won The love of dear New Zealand. And he who comes next, our old Mao, With clear, bright hams, and stiff, strong back, Claims love from us we oannot lack, For sake of dear New Zealand. Why should I name him ? Let it bo, We'll use the letters— just V.P.— Enough for us to kuo'v that ho Adorned our dear Otago. Another kind and honest man Since last wo met has gone to scan The motive of Creation's plan A man who loved New Zealand. To many here poor Leary's name Is Boundless on the scroll of fame But we, who knew him, when Death came Felt sorry for New Zealand. Go round the land which push'd the sea Back, back, and backwards, there you'll see Otago's merchant princes bo — The men who rule New Zealand.
