Tho smoke from the Block 11 mine, Broken Hill, greatly diminished this morning, and the ontlook was so much brighter that it was believed the fire was practically under. However, when tbo oporationa of fighting the fire wore resumed at noon to-day, at first apparently only steam was issuing, but when tiro shafts were opened, smoke immediately commenced to ißsne in lurge volumes, and it is apparent that tho fire is still burning fiercely The shafts were at once closed, and water again turned on. The opening of the shafts proved that tho firo still had a thorough hold in the mine, and was gaining ground, although a million gallons water per day have been poured in Bince Monday last. The directors are loth to try carbonia aoid gas, but if the present methods prove futile muoh longer, an attempt with gas as a lost resonroa will be made on a largo scale. Everything is in readiness for this emergency. The fire has thrown 1200 men out of employment.
