WARDERS' PENSIONS AND THE PRESENT GOVERMENT.

1 TO THE EDITOR. r Sib— There have lately appeared in your 1 paper two letters from correspondents com1 plaining of the hours our warders have to „ work and other hardships they endure Well, sir, I must say that if they do work long hours they get exceedingly well paid t for it. They don't eeem to want to leave • their billets in a hurry, most of them growu ing grey in the service. Your correspondent g seems to forget that they get a good fat c pension on leaving the Service. Why, only ;, the other day one of the warders was ret tired, when he got .£3OO pension. I don't c think their lot is hard at all. It would be . interesting to know the numbc: of appliB cants for warders' billets. 1 think it would ? surprise correspondents. Talking [> about pensions, I think the time has arrived r when pensions hy the State shonld be? . abolished. Public servants, enjoying fat 1 billets, with smug countenances, for years. . and drawing good pay, should be able to nave -, money ; if not, it is their own fault. Sir. I r am in a billet with a private firm for nearly s 20 years. Do I get a pension when my time . -B up? Oh, dear, no! lam liable to get the , kick out any time. Why should tbe Govern3 ment treat their servants differently ? I 3 hope that our members will take this matter 1 up during next session and abolish pensions, 3 thereby saving the colony thousands of pounds per annum, whirb wonlil be better ] spent on the unfortunate unemployed whom 1 thjs present rotten Administration has i oreated. This Government is, I am sure, 1 the worst we have had, or likely to have 1 either. It is a ourse to this fair oolony of . ours. With your kind permission, I will 3 deal with them later on 3 I am, &0., i L»x. P.S.— I do not advooate pensions to be . stopped to those already in the Service, and t who have been promised them — only as 1 regards fnture emplo 6a.— Lex. i Wellington, sth June, 1895
