ANOTHER HINT TO BUSH SETTLERS.
TOTHI IDITOB. Sir— Will you kindly insert from a Scotch praotioal meohanio, for the good of all bush settlers, including " A.P M.," the following, as practised by the Royal School of Forestry in Sootland to rid the soil of tree stumps, viz. :— Holes are bored one inoh in diameter ronnd the stump, it a large one, five inches apart, equal distance between the heart of the stump and the bark. These holes must be bored for a considerable distance down tho stump nnder the snrfaoe of the soil, and the Boil oleared all round to a depth of 18 inches at least. Tbe holes then to be filled with a mixtnre of saltpetre and kerosene, and as it gets absorbed by the wood fill up again, and do this for six weeks, '.'over up after filling to prevent any rain water getting in, Ac. Any time of the year will do, but beßt in dry weather. Any further information can be had by applying to T.KT., Blackbridge P 0., Lower Hutt. This is a common-sense way to get rid of all tree stumps. Saltpetre won't do 'alone!. After the aix weeks they can then be fired, but not till then. I am, Ac, ScriNTiric.
