A Maori named Pene, living at Mahoetahi Pah, killed his wife and little daughter this morning, set fire to the whare, and then shot himself. ' The body of his wife was found in a hut about half a mile from the pah, with the head smashed in. An axe was found alongside the body. It is presumed that Pene first killed bis wife, then went to the pah and killed his daughter, set fire to the whare, and then shot himself. Jealousy is supposed to have been the cause of the crime. An inquest will be held to-morrow.
