AMATEUR GYMNASTIC CLUB.

The Wellington Araatenr Athletio Club's gymnasium was orowded last ovening with a representative gathering of members and 'others attraoted by the announcement of an athletic display. The programme provided proved of most excellent quality. It opened with a very ole ver performance on the Boman rings by the Rizzio Brothers, three young Wellington athleteß (Messrs. W. Clark, W. Dean, and R. Gamble), whose display then and aorobatio display later brought round after round of applause, and, taken all round, was quite worthy to be classed with the best professional exhibition of the same type. Master Doyle earned muoh applause for the oleverness with whioh he swung the light clubs, while his father t?ave a remarkable exhibition with the heavy clubs, put a 1001b dumbbell at arm's length above his head ten times, and then put 1001b and 751b dumbbells up simultaneously. Mr. Jones, who also gave a olub exhibition, performed with the heavy dumbbells, as did Messrs. Chambers and Newman, Mr. Newman putting the 1001b bell up six times and then the 751b and 451b bells simultaneously. Mr. J. M. Earle had the best of a bout of Cnmberlaud wrestling with Mr. J. M'Carthy. Messrs. A. S. Paterson and G. Robinson had five minutes with single-atiokß, and Mr. Chambers and Master Clayer gave an exhibition of high leaping from a spring board. There were three boxing bouts. First, Messrs. J. Doyle and J. Graham had three lively rounds, amidst general applause ; then the club's boxing instructors, Messrs. J. Melaney and J. Graham, httd a set-to; and finally the colossal Dntoh swimming ohampion, H. Plaaoke, boxed four rounds with W. Fisher. The boxers in the fourth round looked so maca in earnest that the referee promptly called " Time," ant ended the spar. The last item was an exhibition of statuesque wrestling under the limelight, eaoh hold, stop, and guard beinginterestingly described by tbe referee. Messrs. S. Mathews and 3. Graham were arrayed as statues, bnt the exigencies of the " wrastle " oauaed the statues to moult their wigs, amidst roars of laughter from the audience. It was an excellent exposition of wrestling. The whole entertainment was admirably oonduoted by a member of the olub, whose illustrative remarks added greatly to its value. Another exhibition is to be given at tbe olabroom about a month heno«.
