TARIFF ALTERATIONS. THE POLICY OF THE REID GOVERNMENT.

IPEISB ASSOCIATION. I Stdnet, Bth May. Ministers are extremely reticent as to the Financial Statement, and nothing definite has leaked oat. It is, however, considered certain that Mr. Reid will propose the abolition of all the ad valorem duties of the Dibbs Government, and probably the whole tariff of the late MinUtry will be swept away with the exception of the grain dnrios, which will raxnain for a time. There-imposition of Ihe threepenny duty on tea is among the strong 1 probabilities, and there is also some likelihood ot the duties on sagar, candles, and bisonita being retained. It is not known whether the Income and Land Tax will be id or Id in the £1, bnt the former is considered probable. If Sir Henry Farkes takes notion regarding the Bndget, it will be to propose a motion in the Bhapo of a general declaration that the financial proposals of the Government are unsatisfactory. By this means, he might hope to capture the whole Protection Party, the extreme Freetraders, and a section of the Labour Party. It is considered that he would bavo a bettor obanoe of upsetting the Government by th°se tactics than would Sir G. R. Dibbs by moving a direct vote of Want of Confidence. However, neither has yet shown bis hand. Should the Government be defeated, it is intended to ask for an immediate appeal to the oonntry.
