We have received from the publishers, Messrs. C. Mitohell A Co., of Red Lion Court, Fleet-street, London, the " Jubilee" issue of their "Newspapor Press Directory." The directory was first published in 1846, and it has developed until the present issue is a huge and splendid volume of 320 pages, bound with whiah is the jubilee edition sup- 1 element of 191 p»;;e3. The present edition is oopiously illustrated, and the information it contains is admirably tabulated. There is a speoial history of the directory during the past 50 years, an extensive and exhaustive " Bibliography of the Press," an essay npon the law as it stands regarding newspapers, a most extensive alphabetical index to newspapers, magazines, and periodicals, a guide to the newspaper press of each oounty in the United Kingdom, special sections on class papers and periodicals, religiouß papers, trade papers and periodicals, metropolitan local papers, telegraphic and press associations, Ac. Then there are special sections davoted to the London papers, biojjraphioal artioles npon John Walter, of The Times, and Edmund Yates, of the World, and a mass of admirably digested information concerning the English, Scotch, Welsh, and Irish press. The special feature of the present issue is its huge supplement with a critical review of the newspaper press of eaoh British possession, and of the United States, and the various African States; together with portraits of leading men connected with the newspapers of eaoh. The special artiole upon the New Zealand presß gives a good deal ot interesting information respecting the newspaper proprietors of the oolony, and in the portraits ot " Representative Newspaper Men of Greater Britain " the " representative newspaper men " of the colony are described as Mr. Robert Gilmour, editor Southland Times; Mr. W. Fenwiok, editor of the Otago Witness; Mr. J.C. Wilkin, manager of the Lyttelton Times; Mr. A. G. Horton, proprietor of the New Zealand Herald; and Messrs. G. Fenwick and S. Saundera, editors of the Otago Daily and Lyttelton Times respectively, whose portraits are given. Now that the reduotion of fire insuranoe rates is agitating the minds of all our citizens, I would call attention to another form of insurance, which is of even more importance—that is, to insure boy 8 and girls against colds and chills, by buying them nice warm clothing at C. Smith's, the Cash Draper, Cuba-street. He can show yon one of the largest and best stooks of boys' suits, overcoats, and reefers in the colony; and for girls' warm oloaks, capes, ulsters and mackintoshes, no one can show a better assortment.—Advfc. for conttnustton o) rtattmg matter »M fourth pace.
