There has been a phenomenal downpour of rain here, three inches having fallen in the last 21 hours, making ten inohes in the last ten days, eqnal to a quarter of the average rainfall for a year. Laßt night it appeared as if a waterspout had burst over the town. The Herald's Wairoa correspondent telegraphs that the Opoiti river is in high flood. The Opoiti Bridge, a big structure over Dag's Chasm, has carried away. The loss to the Wairoa County Council will be from £3UOO to £4000. A good deal of stock has been drowned.
