THE MAYOR EXPLAINS. TO T HE EDITOR.
1 Sib — Referring to the discussion at the 1 Council table on Thursday re the Shop Hours ; Bill, you do me an injustice which I fool ' sure you had no intention of doing, and will | therefore allow me to correct it. I have no ' desire at thin stage to go into the merits of ; the general questioa, and will confine myself to ths correction. You state in your leader ' that I not only by my casting vote as Mayor 1 resolved in favonr of Saturday in plaoe of Wednesday, but that 1 also by my casting [ vote determined the constitution of the > delegatea to tho conference in the direo- ■ tion of giving a majority in favour . of Saturday. I did the very opposite 1 of this. The original name* were — I Councillors Anderson, Fraser, Devine, and , Tatnm. It was pointed out as unfair that i one ward was unrepresented, and Councillor ' Haroourt was substituted for Councillor I Devine. This gave ua a representative ; from each ward, and, as yon say, in that • oaso gave three supporters tor Saturday as , against one for Wednesday, but after thiß . Councillor Fraser offered to resign in favour . of Councillor Devine, but waa not moved. , Councillor Penty therenpon moved his own name in place of Councillor Fraser. This was put to tho vote, and again resulted in a ' tie, and I gave my casting vote in favonr of ' the motion, thereby putting a Wednesday 1 man on in plaoe of a Saturday man. I did ; this thinking it was only fair npon the conference both, sides should be equally ' represented. In this I think I showed no ' bias, a thing I waa anxious to avoid. 1 lam, &0., [ Chablis M. Luki. (
