_ There was something suggestively suspicions in the way the report of the Railway Committee on the Molcihinui Cardiff case was brought up in the small hours of Saturday morning, and tho attempt made to refer it to the Government for consideration without the Bouse having time to consider it. Into tho full merits of the case spaco does not permit us to enter at the present moment, but we should very much like to know on what data the Committee acted in apparently fixing the capital value of the portion of the iMokihinui line used at £8000. There is at least prima fade proof that this is far below the actual value of the line, which cost more than the Government line to constrnct. The portion whioh is in question stands in the company's books, we believe, as representing an expenditure of upwards of £12,000, That the Mokibinui Company should not, eveu if it desired to do so, play the part of the dog-in-tho-manger, may be at once ad. mitted. The < ardiff Company should bo allowed to U6e the line on fair and reasonable payment. Neither company should be sweated ; but in view of the recommendation that the Government should purchase the Mokihinui line, the attempt to depreciate the capital value of the line by fixing it at £8000 for the 1 mile 68 chains over whioh the Cardiff Company would run is certainly very unfair. The Mokihinui Company is entitled to\a fair prioe for its property, and to fair remuneration for running powers being granted over the line. It is aounning device, with an ulterior object, to fix the remuneration for haulage in relation to an unfair capital value. The matter requiro3 looking into. If either company is to be considered more than the other, it should be the Mokibinni Company, whioh has borne all the cost and risk of constructing this lino and opening the field. Football news and letters to the Editor comprise the matter on the fourth page of this issue. We have still a number of letters on hand for whioh we are unable to find room. They will appear as soon as possible. The English mails brought from Australia to Auckland by the s.b. Rotomahana will come to hand by the Takapuna — probably to morrow night. The omission of some words in the text of the address issued by Mr. M. P. Camoron to the ratepayers of Lambton Ward through onr colnmns on Saturday conveyed a different meaning from what was intended. The paragraph Bhould have read as follows: —"I agree with the general impression that the burden of rates is growing heavier each year, and the result a gradual diminution of the value of all city properties." The Wanganui and Christ's College football teams were entertained at dinner by Mr. and Mrs. Firth at the Wellington College on Saturday evening. -»
