At a meeting of the Auckland College and Grammar School Board to-day Colonel Haultain moved—" That the Board of Governors is prepared to grant free tuition to any lads of tho Maori race who are prepared to proceed to the secondary schools." After some discussion the motion was agreed to. The Eev. D. Runoiman, M.A., for many years a University Examiner, has been appointed Registrar of the University College. A deputation, consisting of Mesdames Sohnackenberg (President), Plummer, and Main, from the Women's Christian Temperance Union, waited upon the Board of Education relative to introducing soientifio temperance instruction in the pnblic schools. Mrs. SchnaokeDberg urged that it should be made a pass snbjeot. The Board decided to consider the matter in a fortnight. Mr. A. H. Natban has been elected Chairman of the Harbour Board. This Day. At a meeting of the Women's Political League a resolution waß gassed in favour of raising the ago of consent to 18. Napier, 28th August. Beamish's homestead at Mohaka has been destroyed by fire. There are no particulars. At the annual meeting of the parishioners of the Cathedral Parish a motion against the Divorce Extension Bill was unanimously adopted. Dunedin, 28th August. There waß £85 taken when the Gothic was in port by making a ohargo for" admisßion. Of thiß a sum of £50 has been given to the Dnnedin Sailors' Rest, and £5 to tbe Port Chalmers Best. This Day. Michael Kelly has been convicted of stealing jewellery from tbe Arcade. Invercargill, 28th August. Tbe house of Jabez Lyons, butcher, on the Bluff-road, about three miles from town, was burned to-night during the absenoe of the family.
