THE VOLUNTEERS.

The ordinary woekly drill of the City Rifles, held last evening at tho Volunteer Drillshed, was well attended, 41 of all ranks being present, under Captain Collins. The evening was devoted to company drill, under Lieqt. W. G. Duthie, and at tho olose the men were notified that the Government inspection parade of the oompany would take place next Monday, when a full muster was desired. The City Rifles reoruits will go through a course of Morris tube practice on Friday evening next, preparatory to their annual class-firing. Dr. F. W. Maokenzie continued his scries of lectures to the City Rifles Ambulance Class last evening. Over 40 members wero present, and the lecture, whioh was both interesting and instructive, was listened to with great attenttion. At its' olose the Captain moved a vote of thanks to the lecturer, whioh was oarried by aoolamation. The doctor announced that tho next leoture would take plaoe on Monday, 10th September, whon more practical lessons would be given in the shape of bandaging and fixing splints, Ao.

A woman named Eliza Walters was arrested this afternoon by Mounted Constable Wilson on a obarge of having stolen a pair of boots from Mr. M'Donald's shop, Cuba-street. The liabilities of Viggo John Sorenaon, baker, amount to .£lll lls Cd, the principal creditors being J. and T. Meek (Oamaru), .£3O, and A. Stevenson (Dunedin), .£2B 17* 3d. The assets, consisting of book debts, stock-in-trade, Ao., amount to JJ7S 10s. A successful rehearsal of " The Mikado " was held by the Amateur Operatic Sooietj last night.
