A man named Arthur Morton, with oovoral aliases, has been' Rent to gaol for three months for imposition. Ho appears to have made a tour of tho oonntry districts of. tho colony, carefully avoiding the cities. He landed at Auckland four yoais ago, and worked his way South. Ho appearß to have represented himself as an officer of the Post and Tolegraph Dopartment, besides whioh he took orders, or rather cosh, for rubber stamps, orders whioh were never fulfilled. Chbistchubch, 26th August. Tho Charitable Aid Board received £60 from the Sydenham Borough Council and .£SO from the Rangiora Borongh Connoil, to be expended, together with the Government subsidy thereon, iv providing work for the unemployed. Qibborne, This Day. The Royal Oak Hotel at Blatawhoro waß burned down this morning. The fire is supposd to have been oauscd by a dofeotive chimney. The insurances are— JE4so on the hotel and stables iv the Liverpool, London, and Globe, and .£3OO on the stock and f nrniture in the Commercial Union. Hawera, This Dat. It has been deoided to hold a dairy show in the autumn, under the auspices of the Egmont Agricultural and Pastoral Association. The chief prize for cheese will be a trophy valued at 50 guineas, with .£lO cash for the maker of the oheese, open to all the colony. Warm, genial weather prevails, and though the grass ib baokward, a start with dairying will be made early next month. Auckland, This Day. A meeting in connection with the engineering and blacksmithing trades, to take into consideration tho present tariff, resolved that a committee bo appointed to consider the existing tariff in respect to the iron trade, and make representations to the Government in connection therewith.
