"THE SUBJECTION OF WOMEN."

TO THB KDITOB. Sie— ln your iMue of Monday appealed a letter from a correspondent, "Adam," on above subject, in which the Bible is quoted in support of the most pernicious doctrine of the subjection of womon to men, and, in consequence, their exclusion from all civil and political rights. The line of argument your corespondent indulges in, although, as you observe, a peculiar one, still no doubt has yet an influence upon a good many well-meaning people, to all of whom I beg to draw attention to certain verses in Paul's Epiatlo to the Romans, Chapter XVI., which are as follows : — |' I commend unto you Phoebe our bister, which is a servant of the church which is at Genchre. That ye receive her in the Lord as becometh saints, and that ye assist her in whatsoever business she bath need you, for she hath been a succourer of many and of myself also." I have not a Greek lexicon by me, but believe tho word "servant " can be construed into one holdiug office similar to that of a deacon. Be this as it xc»y, the above clearly shows that tho woman Phoebe took a prominent part in the affairs of the early Church. Perhaps those persons who think that women should not even vote at parish meetings might consider Paul's commeudution of Phoebe. If women were speoially praised for taking an active part in the affairs of the early Church, the same authority could not blame them for assisting to remedy the many abuses of our present social system. I am, &c, Houo Sum.
