UNITKD I>R»6S ASSOCIATION. I (Received July 28, 11.15 a.m.) Melbourne, This Day. Mr Reid. Minister for Defence, states that during the voyage from Vancouver to Honolulu he had as a fellow-pdßsenger an ex-Naval offioerof tho Imperial Service, who had been oommi&sioned by Mr. Sandford Fleming to se.ze Neuker Island, north of Hawaii, as a lauding station for the Pacific cable. Mr Reid persuaded him to abandon his intention, as the island had belonged to Hawaii Bince 1855, ami he was aware that negotiations were passing b«twocu tho Imperial and Hawaiian Governments for the purchaso of the island. On reaching Honolulu, Mr. Reid interviewed the looal Government, and strongly advised Ministers to deal liberally with the British Government over Neckor Island. He pointed out the great advantage Hawaii w^uld derive from having a telegraph station so cloec to its doorß. Mr. Reid adds that everything connected with the interview wa3 open and above board. >____^__«__«».
