Tbe various applications were then oon- ,* sidered. * The Commissioner said the euccesuftl 9 applicant at the first ballot was Thomas Ellis, licensee of a hotel at Waverley, who contended that ho could make the application legally as everything in his hotel was made over to his wife. Mr Baker was not clear as to tho legality of the position. Mr. Piraui said that as licensee of the hotel he must be the occupier under the Licensing Act. It was deeded to ask for further information. The following applications were f approved : — Edmund Burke, Whenuakura, section 2a ; Christian Sobmdt, Marton, section 3a ; Samuel Dunn Johnston, Waverley, section 7a ; Albe-t Anderson, Palmers ton North, section ß; Eose Mason, Waverley, section 11a ; John Barry, Normanby, section 9 ; Ruddock and Watts, Wellington, section . 11 A ; William Stewart, Turakina Valley, section 4a ; Ellen Hughes (a married woman), section sa. This lett one section unapplied for. The acceptance of Ruddock and Watts' application for section 11a was mode subject to their not desiring to wuit their chance of taking tbe section for which Thomas Ellis had been sucoessfnl at the ballot, and for which they had already applied, in case of its being decided that a hotel keeper , could not hold the section. ; Apropos of the application of Mrs. Hughes, ; tho Commissioner said he had been under i the impression that a married woman could i only become owner and not lessee under , the existing land laws, bnt a decision i just given in Dunedin was to the effect that i a married woman could become a lessee. , I Left sitting.]
