LICENSING MATTERS.

A LICENSED VICTUALLEB3' FRIENDLY SOCIETY. IBt Teleqbaph.] lunitbd pbkBB association.! Dunkpin, 11th April. The (Committee of the Licensed Victuallers' Association in its annual report recommends the Association to form itself into a strong friendly society, with benevolent as well as definite aims, in which each member will have sufficient interest, financially and legally, to compel him or her not only to strictly observe the law, but to see that others do so ako. At B&lclutha to-day William Quest and hU wife were charged with selling drink without a license. It appeared that J. C. Anderson called at Quest's store and asked Mrs. Guest to send a gallon of whisky to his house with come goods ordered by Mrs. Anderson. Mrs. Guest said they did not keep it, but would get it, and the carter called at another store and delivered the whisky with the other goods, the bill being made out in Guest's name. Anderson has not yet paid for the whisky, but the price charged is the same as paid by Guest for it. The case against Guest was withdrawn. The defence was that Mrs. Quest was merely an agent for Anderson, and that there had been no sale, and further, that she merely acted as her husband's servant. In view of the importance of the case, Mr. Hawkins, S.M., reserved his decision. The Taieri paper says that the Cabinet intends discussing the propriety of^esting the validity of the rejection of informal votes.
