OBITUARY.

LOED JUSTICE BOWEN. THE MAEQUIS OF AILESBUEY.

IUNITJCD PiIJSSS ASSOCIATION. | London, 10th April. Lord Bowen, one of the Lords of Appeal in Ordinary, is dead. [Deceased was a sou of the Rev. Chriatopbar Bowpn, of Freshwater, Isle of Wight, by Catharine En.ily, daughter of Sir Eichard Steelo, Bart. He was born at Wollagton, Gloucestershire, in 1835, and educated at Rugby and at Balliol College, Oxford. He carried off tbreo of the great University prizes, including the Hertford and Ireland scholarships, and, together with several distinguished contemporaries, he was placed in 1858 in tho first class in classical honours. Called to the bar at Lincoln's Inn in 1861, he joined the Western circuit. He was senior member of the Truok Commission in 1870, was appointed Junior Standing Counsel to the Treasury in 1872, and Recorder of Penzance in tho samo year. Though he never " took silk," he acquired a leading position iv his profession, and in June, 1879, he was appointed a Judge of tho Queen's Bench Division of tho High Court of Justice, on Mr. Justice Mellor's retirement from the Bench, and was knighted. In May, 1882, ho was appointed a, Lord Justice in the Court of Appeal, in tho room of the late Sir John Holker, and sworn of tho Privy Council. Last year he was made a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary, with tho title (for life) of Baron Bowen of Colwood, in the County of Sussex.] (Boceived April 11, 11 a.m ) London, 10th April.
