RAILWAY RETURNS.
The railway revenue for tho four weeks ending 3rd Fobruary amounted to £98,962 14s 6d, and tho expenditure to £62,194 7s Sd. In the corresponding period last year the revenue was £98,100 19s 4d, and the expenditure £55,927 0s 2d. Of the revenue, the North Island lines yielded £37,603 133 Bd, and tho Middle Island lines £61,359 0s lOd, as against £3t>,158 10s and £61,942 9s 4d respectively in the corresponding period. The North Island linos absorbed £23,599 7s Bd, as against £19,979 12a 7d,and tho Middle Island lines £38,595, as against £35,947 7s 7d. Tlio proportion of expenditure to revenue on ihe several lines for tho respective periods of 1894-93^ calculated on an annual average, was as follows: — North Island— Kawakawa, 92 71,81"52; Whangarei, 71-42, 7788 ; Kaihu, 88-39, 7723 ; Auckland, 6630, 66 60 ; Napior-Taranaki, 64 76, 62 73 ; Wellington, 63-16, 64.07. Middle Island— Hurunui-Bluff, 62 13, 6314; GreymonthBrunner, 5379, 6219; Greymouth-Hokitika, 5797, ; Wostport, 55.40, 5062; Nelson, 101-88,93-02; Pioton, 10777, 103 95; grand total, 63-17, 63 71. On tho Wellington section the receipts were £8839 0s 7d, as against £5316 17s sd. The number of passengers carried was 42,328, as against 37,767 ; and the fares amountod to £3366 os2d, as against £3050 7a lid.
