DEATHS OF INFLUENTIAL MAORIS.
IBt Tblkgrafh. i (Our Own Correspondent. J Tattranga, This Day. Akubata Tupaea, a native assessor, and the recognised head of a Tauranga tribe, also an influential chief of the Ngatiraukawa (Wellington district), died at Katikati yesterday, aged 55. The Tupae* family always supported the Europeans in the tronblesomo times, and Akuhata and his father (Hori) accompanied Sir George Grey, then Governor, on a tour of New Zealand. Deceased had been suffering from paralysis for some four years, the affliction being attributed to viakutu (witchcraft), consequent upon n, native woman falling in love with him, and being rejected, when he was at Wanganui on Government business. He was related to tribes in the Waikato, Napier, and Wellington districts, and a large gathering of natives (about 2000) is oxpeotod to hold tho tangi, whioh takes place at Rangawaea, near Tauranga. Mastkrton. This Dat. An influential young Maori woman, the wife of J. Karaitiana, died last night from asthma. A monster tungi is to be held.
