A correspondent. " Bluo Bella," writea to us from tho Hutt, strongly urging the formation of a Women's Burns Club, to encourage acquaintance with tho poet's best works, and to keep his memory in honour. Last wook valueless cheques for sums ot JB7 10a and .£5 respectively were parsed to Messrs. T. 11. Coltman and H. J. Freoraan, watchmakers and jewellers. In each case a small purchase was made by tho person tendering the cheque, and no suspicion was ontertained that the signatures were otherwise than genuine, that for the larger sum bearing tho name of Mr. Fillis, the wellknown oircus proprietor, and the other that of John Mitchell, also a person known in the city. A cheque was also presented at the shops of Messrs. Grody and Jonness, jewellers, but was not cashed. The matter was pl'icod in tho handß of the police, with the result that a man known as Frederick H. Bronwick, alias Hone, was arrested at Patoa on the charge of having forged the signatures to the cheques. Bronw ck was brought down by train to-day, and will appear before Mr. Martin, R M., in duo course. Smith, the Cash Draper, Cuba-street, has proved so far a very big success. The publio seem to appreciato the idea of having everything throughout the shop reduced, in preference to the oatchpenny style that has been in vogue of late of reducing a few bait lines. Note, the Bale will be continued daily from 9 a.m. to 6p m. and 10 on Saturdays. The tables and baskets will bo replenished each morning with sterling bargains. — Adyt.
