EDUCATION BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Board was held to-day. Present— Messrs. J. R. Blair (Chairman), W. W. M'Cardlo, J. Young, W. C. Buchanan, and Rev. J. Patersou. Messrs. W. A. Fitzherberfc, F. H. Froser, and Dr. Newman were granted leave of absence from tho meeting. Tho pay-sheet, amounting to .£3472 10a 9J, was passed. Tho Finance Committee recommended that the salary of Mi^s Treadwell be continued at tho rate of .£BO per annum in consideration of the faofc tbat she has been transferred from tho Upper Hutt school, where she was receiving a salary of .£BS. With regard to. tho application from Jessie Hutchen, of Newtown, and Nellie Godfrey, of Pahiatnn, for increases of salary, the committee recommended the Board to consider the question of amending its regulations with a view to providing a more liberal salary to those oi-pupil teachers who have obtained full certificates. —Mr. Young considered that while thp Board was dealing with the quettion of salaries, tho remuneration of tt c female teachers should be considered. Fcr a long time he had felt that their female staff, which was doing excellent work, wag very inadequately paid in proportion to the male staff. — Tho Chairman maintained that the Board's teachers were very adequately paid as compared with teachers in tho service o£ other Boards — Mr. Young said he was aware of that, but two wrongs did not make a right, and he was of opinion that thiir female teachers did not recoivo fair remuneration for tho work they were doing. — Mr. Patorson agreed with Mr. Young to the extent that assistants, both male and female, were underpaid. He thought that the system on which tho salaries were based should bo revised. — Tho Chairman said that the adoption of tho Committee's report would practically mean this. — The report was adopted on the motion of McCardle, seconded by Mr. Patorson, and the Chairman then formally gave notice that the revision of the regulations in regard to salaries should be taken into consideration within the next three months. Thn Committee appointed to report on the question of a suitable school sito for Khandallah stated that they had examined the two sites, and rocommendod the purchase of sections 10 and 11, containing 3 acres 2 perches, on Lower-road, for tho pnrpose required, at the price of .£3OO. The report was adopted, on the motion of Mr. Pater sod, seconded by Mr. Young. Tho Pabiatua Committee was voted a sum of .£lO for repairs to the school grounds, which wero stated to be under water in some parts. With regard to the Johnsonville School, which had been closed on account of measles, the Board expressed the opinion tl.at tho school should be kept open. An application for a tank for the teacher* residence at Matarawa was referred to tho Inspector for a report ; and a request from the Mastertou Committee for a vote for providing more gravel for tho Infant School was refused. The Chairman was authorised to deal with certain requests made by the Tenni and Kilbirnie Committees, and the following votes were passed for the works mentioned : —Park Vale, .£lO for gravelling; Claroville, £5 for repairs to sheds, gates, Ac. ; Upper Hutt, JBIO for repairs to fonoing. An application on behalf of the settlers of Naturi, one of the Forty-Mile Busu Settlements, for a school, was referred to Mr. M'Cardle, who undertook to make a report to the next meeting of the Board. A deputation was reoeived from the Otakj School Committee for the purpose of urging the removal of the school to a site nearer the railway station. It ww resolved that steps should be taken to acquire the proposed new site. The Board then went into committee.
