FOOTBALL.
A meeting of the New Zealand Football Association was held yeiterd&y afternoon, and was attended by Messrs. L. Tripp (Canterbury), A. M. Henderson and A. B. Gibson ( Wellington), P. D. Leslie (OUgo), and J. B Gibbons (Auokland). Mr. Xripp was voted to the chair. A letter was read from the Wellington Bugby Union, promising to Bet apart grounds for the annual tournament amongst the Association oluDs of the oolony , and it ni deoidod that the matches should.
t ike place at Nowtown, boginningon Friday morning, 25th proximo, and ending on the afternoon of tho following day. Mr. A. Heather, of Auckland, and Mr. L. Tripp. of Wellington, were elected Vice-President3 The tournament is expected to be even moro successful than the one held last year at Christchurch, as Otajo and Auckland will be represented by much stronger teams than on that occasion The Poneke Club resent the request of the Managing Committee of the Rugby Union that Mr. W. Hare, who was assaulted at Potone last Saturday, Bbonld not be again appointed lino umpire. Mr. W. White, Secretary of the club, has written as follows to tho Union :— " Dear Sir — I have tho honour to inform yon that wo will not for one moment entertain your committee's suggestion re onr line umpire, Mr. W. Haro. He has acted in that capacity for the past three seasons with satisfaction ; wo see no reason now for removing him from that position. My committee consider that your suggestion nnd the nndue publicity of same, was quite nncalled for, nnd to a oertain extent reflects on our club. I havo further to inform you that as long as tho W.R.U. allows clubs to nominate their own umpires, then so long will we continue to take advantage of Mr. Hare's services. In reply to the concluding part of yonr letter re his decisions not giving satisfaction (to, I suppose you mean, opposing teams), I have to point out that it has taken three years to find this fault, and now is only found because he has been as■aultod. I would further ask you to name any umpire nnder the W.R.U. that does give satisfaction to all."
