PAHIATUA NOTES.

(Our Own Correspondent.,/ Pahiatua, 19th July. The road to Makuri will not bo oponed for dray traffic for abont a fortnight, owing to the lart, r e number of slips that have occurred on this rood through the constant wot weather. Mails and goods are taken as far as the Tiraumea river and packed the remainder of the distance, which is some twelve miles. I am informed that it is the intention of the County Conncil to strike a special rate to pay for the damage that has occurred through the slips, as it is estimated to cost tho Conncil between .£3OO and £MO. If this is true there will be a large cry among those interested. Thero is still another grievance, viz., the building of tbo bridge across tho Mangatainoka. Some of the City Fathers want it to be near their proportie3, viz., Manpa-tainoka-street, while others want it at the original site selected by Government (so I am informed) on the Mangaliao-road. The question has been brought up at the borough meatmg, and <he latter site lms been chosen by a majority of one of tho councillors. This is the V urnins question of the day. as all the councillors are more or less personally interested The unemployed are making-great progress with the railway works in 'his locality, a large number of hands having recently beon put on. It is a great pity that the Government do not push this small gap through as quickly as possiblo, instead of doing a bit here and a bit a mile or so further on. Mr. H. Godtscualk has purchased Mr. Walker's business at Mangatainoka.
