ARBOR DAY.

♦ The Department of Agriculturo has issued a circular relating to Arbor Day, callingattention to the holiday on the 4th prox , and inviting all residents to assist in planting trees, flowers, and seeds about their honses nnd farms, on public reserves, and along the highways. Tho circular proceeds : Iho intention is to extend tbo interest shown last year, and make this movement a colonial ono. r Xhe importance of promoting forest-growth, the culture of trees, and their preservation at all stages, should command iho interest of every resident in the colony, and it is hoped that the Education Boards and teachers and pupils will take an especially active part in the proceedings ol the day. By the annual celebration of Arbor Day it is sought to make each colonist understand how important the care of our forests has already become, owing to the wholesale destruction of timbor-trees which has been going on for many years past in ail parts of the oolony. This colony ha 3 special oause to regret the lack of trees in many districts, and to deplore -like the state of Colorado — the reckless stripping of forests from hills and mountain-sides, and the consequent diminishing supply of water in many stroama. ft is felt that if the local authorities will interest themselves in this matter the success of Arbor Day will be assured , and lasting good to tho country will result." The circular proceeds to suggest that the local bodits should take chargo of the proceedings and appoint a marshal, and that the ceremonies should be made as imposing as possible. The sites for planting should be arranged beforehand, and holes properly dug for the trees, and the attendance of as many professional gardeners as possible to assist anddireettho planting- is all-important.
