[ PER S.S. ROTOMAHANA AT THE BLUFF.] Melbourne, 31st May.
Meetings have been held in various parts of Victoria expressing indignation at the action of the Government regarding the Davis and Millidge affair. Mr. Isaacs, late Solicitor-General, addrcßsed a meeting at Chiltorn, where he had a great reception. From all parts of the colony, he said, there was one voice going forth, saying that the ordinary course of justice should be pursued. When he took office he swore to do his duty towards the people without fear or favour, and when .Ministers did not act up to their faith there was suspicion that there was one law for the rich and another for the poor. Under no circumstances, however, would he consent to action that wonld encourage that suspicion. He did not think that the colony wonld be at all satisfied with the Patterson Government, for all tho vast resources of the country were nothing compared with its fair name. (Cheera.) Justice mnst be certain. It must fall on all alike, and it must aleo be swift. It was useless any Government dauutiing back the coarse oi justice, as it wonld'buist forth again. He would point ou£ that a previous Aitorney-U eneral had investigated the cases, three Ciown Prosecutors had been engaged upon them, and in the opinion of all a strong prima fade case had been made out. To now leave these men untried was wrong, and on injustice to tho men themselves Such a course, if generally followed, would create an arutocracy of criminals. (Great cheerinfr.) 'J he meeting unauimcraslv resolved — " That the action of Mr. leaacs in connection with the Mercantile Bank cases is aocepted by this electorate, which recognises his high sense of honour and unswerving determination to keep at all hazards the avenues of justice clear and undofiled, for which he is entitled to the gratitude of this constituency and the country."
