That firm Temperance principles aro uo lougor a barrier to advaucement in English municipal life is again shown by the recent Mayoral elections in England and Wales. Up to the time of writing, 43 instances of total-abstaining mayors now elected have been reported. Besides these, there are 30 other mayors, who are not actually teetotallers, yet give their support to tiio principles of the Direct Veto, as advocated by the United Kingdom Alliance. Neither list can, however, be regarded as finally complete. A number of other mayors accepted, as politicians, the Direct Veto as part of the Liberal party programme, riomo of those named as abstainers have long been active Temperance workers in their towns, aud others have been vigorous Alliance men for many years.
