, THE CHAMPIONSHIP. ] WELLINGTON V. PBTONK. Thto Pctonc Club's first fiitecu sccurod ant easy Victory on their own ground on Saturday, When thoy beat ft team of tbo Wellington Clnb by 18 points to lovo. It was known, that the Wellington Clnb would not be strongly ropresornted, but no one for ono moment anticipated that ths Petoiies would wii* bo easily as thoy did. Tho gronnd wn* heavy, bmt not slushy, and tho play wa» faat at times. Tho Wellingtons were forced down in tfos first minute, and for tho remainder of tho ppell thoy were mostly on tho defensive. Soon aftor tho opening Hoywood Btopped v. dangorona rush of tho Potolttf forwards, and pre Tented them from scoring, trat not long: afterwards Polling obtaining poneessiou of tho bSU fiftished a grand run by touching down h&ti *he Wellington goal. Bawnbci■was ontrustod with tho lack out tlio attempt was not successful Towards tho ond of tho spell tho Wellingtons ■were allowed a iita kick, a Petone player having bold tho ball, and Johnston nearly succeeds)) in sending tho loather ovor the crosß-bnf , Whon tho second spell opened the Petoue* had two points (a try) to thoir credit, but before the gamo ended thoy increased the nnmbor to 18. Tho Wellingtons inado a. very poor exhibition, and tho wonder is thattheir opponents did not score more heavily. Not many momonts aftor tho term h«r3 opened the Petones got on a fine rush ami Milne touobod down, Baumbcr failing in tho kick, although tho angle was an easy ono and thero was no wind. Shortly afterwards tho Wellingtons wero forcod down as tho result of a long kick, and as soon as tho ball had boon brought into play again Banmbtr received a pass from A. Boss and potted b. goal. Ho potted two more goal* before the game ended, and A. Bobs also touched down, Jackson failing to convert.- _ Tho third goal scored by Uaumber was kickod a few momenta before tho end of the gamtf . The match was only fairly interesting. Noithcr team showed quod form, although tho Pctones, of course, played much bettor than thoir opponents. Tho Wellington team was very weak — in fact, the club lias not boon so poorly represented in a sonior match for years. Tho back division played very badly, and somo of the forwards wero not good enough for a junior team. Tho Potonos wero without tho servicos of Wynyard, their skipper, who was unablo to take part in the gamo on account of a cold, but tho inclusion of Baumbor, tho ox-Waira-rapa representative who played brilliantly, moro particularly in tho second spell, potfcinft throo goals in about twenty minutes, fully compensated for tho loss of tho captain'tf sorvicos. Polling and Boss also played well in tho back division. Woods, Pyko, Lomas, and Milne wero oxeellent forwards. Tho most oonspicuons amongst the backs on tho Wellington sido woro Mell Stuart, D. Bainett, and Smithers, while M'Lean, Cockroff , and Thomson wero the best of the forward?. Tho referee was Mr. J. M. King ana Messrs. F. Pownall and Carey being touchline judges. ATHLETIC V. MELROSE. Athlotic met Molroso on No. 1 ground, NoWtown Park, on Saturday, and boat them easily. The ground was moro suited for it " buffalo wallow " than a football field, the* mud and water bring anklo doop in parts. Tho Mclrose, who had shown fairly good form in thoir previous matches, woro ospected to at leaßt hold their own, but latfc year's champions smothered the* at ovoiy point, whother in the scrum or in tho open. The game was, thoreforo, not particularly interesting. Johnston, J. Campbell, and Sovcrne made their first appoarance this season in tho ranks of the Athletics, and Bidler played instead of Goldie in tho f orwai & division. Tho game started at 3.20 — late, op usual — Fraser kicking off down hill. A ahoit and sharp encounter ensued between tho forward divisions, and then the ball came down in front of Severno and Eidlor to a voiy muddy oornor near the gato, where ono if the Athletics almost got over tho line. Melrose retaliated by stormiugtho Athletio fort, but woro forced back into tho middlo of tho field. Here the leather loitered awhile, going out of bounds first ono side and then on\tbu other. A scram or two, and then tho Athlotic forwards came down the opposing; backs like an avalanche Nearing tLa Melroso quarters Bedward pasßod the ball out to Frascr, who mado for the northern oornor Being threatened with opposition, he passed on to Galloway, who was stopped a few yards from the line, but not before ho hod an opportunity of transferring his oharge back again to his skipper, who ran in and scored a try. Campboll took the kick, and althongh the anglo was difficult, and the ball very greasy, he placed a splendid goal. Within a few minutes after this Bcore, Isfillow»y &nd Fraser repeated their pfenrityatiperformance, the 'latter scoring a try right behind tho Molrose goal posts. From this try Campbell also kicked a goal, Melrosc had another narrow cscapo directly afterwards, as Hanna had an almost certain try beforo him had ho not slipped and allowed tho ball to go outside the ropes. MelroEO suffered three successive force downs, and tho spell ended— Athletics, 10 points ; Melroso. 0. Soon after changing ends, Bidding, of tho Molrose, spoilt a chance of his side scoring through kioking too hard. Molrose kept in Athletio territory for some minutes, ana the latter had to work their hardest to prevent a score, until Baker, receiving the ball from tho throw-out, mado a slashing run right down the field into the Mclrose twenty-five, where he was grassed by Brewer. Burns brought it back again to the muddy corner near tho gate, whence it was worked dangerously near the Athletic lino. But tho smart work put in by the letter team put an end to all danger, and Molroso wore forced down twico, instead of scoring. Beforo the leather was allowed out of the Melrose ground again, Eraser had potted » goal, bringing up the Athletic score to 14 points. After this, Campbell, of the Molroso, tried two shots at the Athletio goal from' marks, but without success. A few minutesbefore time was called the Melrose forwardsrushed the ball over the Athletio line, and acertain soore was averted by Eraser hurling the oval over tho ropes. The Melroso supporters hooted loudly, but it was football, and what any player would have done under similar circumstances. The game ended with the ball in neutral territory, and the score — Athletic, 14 points; Melroso, nil. Mr. G. Fache acted as referee, and Messrs. E. Davy and B.
