NEW ZEALAND RIFLE ASSOCIATION.

IBy Tklkoeaph.] [united press association. I Tbbntham, 12th Maroh. The high wind prevailing at the camp all day interfered with the rapid progress of firing;, as the men necessarily took a longer timo in aiming, as moat of tho shooting was at extended distances. Owing to a mistake in the scoro-sheets of the Wellington Match several errors appeared in the original prize-list. £A was the amount of the prize falling to Camoron, of Tenui. Jaok, of Dunedin, and France, Wellington, scored 81, and took £1 prizes, Jones, of Waikari, taking a similar prize with a> total of 80. This morning shortly after daylight a drenching rain set in, and after it had fallen for* two hours the wind changed and the weather cleared. The men were placed at discomfort, owing to several tents leaking, but a huge number of competitors were m town. There is a good deal of grumbling at the ranged bnt this is probably due more to the unfavourable weather than to the range itself. As it will be seen from the positions for the championship, mentioned below, many of the " old stagers " are coming to tho front, showing clearly that the moro experienced men can hang on. The shooting, however, has not been so goo*d as at Omaranui, Hawke's Bay, last year, but then at the Utter place the weather waß good throughout. Last year the opening match was won with a score of 97, while this year the first money was secured with 89. In the second match 90 won at Napier, while here 82 was the highest score. In the Marlborough Match two off the possible secured the first money last year, while here it was four away. The firing points for 300 yds are very soft, and will not be improved by the heavy rain this morning. There is some talk of having the firing there at the standing position, which, if carried out, will cause no end of grumbling among competitors. Only 17 shots per man are to be fired at 300 yards throughout the meeting, but it is expected that the Conncil will think twice before ordering them to be fired standing. Messrs. M'Cartney, of Portobello, have had to leave for home owing to sickness in their family. Two out of the matches counting for the Belt have concluded, .and the following are the highest positions : — Taylor, Auckland 123 Purnell, Wanganni 119 Parslow, Auokland 119 Donghty, Anokland 119 Humphries, Napier . 119 F.
