A large meeting, convened by the Mayor, was hold last evening with respect to connecting Auckland and Taranaki by roads. A resolution was passed urging on the Government tho necessity of immediately constructing a good coach road from Stratford Did tho East-road by a line already surveyed to the Central Bailway route, ana that a branch road bo similarly constructed by tho Mimi North-road until they intersect tho Central. A committee was appointed to carry out tho resolution. Wanoanui, This Day. Prisoner Konny, convicted of arson fit the last sittings of the Supreme Court, confessed his gnilt to tho gaoler tliia morning of haying set firo to tho Commercial Hotel whilo in a state of fron/.y. He tried to put tho firo out as soon as tho deod was done, but found he could not. Sorrow was oxpressod for thoso injured. Dunedin, This Day. Tho Hon. Mr. M'Konzio to-day intimated that probably ho would bo unable to attend tho f urthor mootings of tho Education Board, but that ho did not resign being undesirous of giving tho troublo of an election of a now member to sit only till March next, the date when his appointment expires. Ho will not offer for re-election then, but may do so whon he ceases to bo a Minister. Chribtchurch. This Day. Tho Premier arrived thia morning and was interviewed by sovoral deputations. Ho will attend the banquet to the Agent-General thia ovening, whore tho Governor, Mr. Rolleston, and Sir John Hall will also be presont. Port Chalmers, This Dat.
